The House Armed Services Committee (HASC) will begin to mark up the FY2012 Defense Authorization bill on Wednesday, May 4.  HASC chair Rep. Buck McKeon  (R-CA) announced that subcommittee markups would begin this week under “a new level of transparency” to the process that will allow the public to gain detailed information on the bill earlier than before.

McKeon said that the new HASC procedures exceed House requirements to post bill language online one day before action by a subcommittee or the full committee.  He directed HASC staff to post online a detailed “section-by-section analysis” of the bill, as well as bill and report language.  As a result, you will be able to find detailed information on the bill and track subcommittee action on the committee website, beginning Tuesday, May 3rd.  In the past, detailed information became available only after the full committee voted on the entire bill.

The HASC markup schedule calls for four subcommittees to mark up on Wednesday, May 4:  Military Personnel; Emerging Threats and Capabilities; Strategic Forces; and Tactical and Land Forces.  On Thursday, May 5, the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee and the Readiness Subcommittee will mark up their sections of the bill.  McKeon has scheduled full committee action on the complete bill for Wednesday, May 11.
