Confirmation hearing held for Coast Guard Commandant nominee

VADM Robert J. Papp, Jr., nominee to be the next Commandant of the Coast Guard, testified at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee this week.  VADM Papp has been in the Coast Guard for almost 35 years and currently is commander of the Coast Guard Atlantic Area (LANTAREA) and Defense Force East.  Prior to that, he served as the Chief of Staff of the Coast Guard and commander of the Ninth Coast Guard District.  In his testimony, VADM Papp stated that, if confirmed, he will move to complete ongoing reforms including modernizing headquarters operations, updating financial management systems, reforming the acquisition program, and recapitalizing the fleet, aircraft, and Command, Control, Computers, Intelligence, and Surveillance systems.  He also committed to work to address the gaps in capabilities and competencies and to provide the workforce with the best support, professional development, and a safe and productive workplace environment.  VADM Papp would replace current Commandant, ADM Thad Allen.
